It that time of year again, testing season! It’s also the time of year that school counseling offices receive an increase of students visiting for help with anxiety about testing. So I thought it would nice to share my favorite tips for test taking.
1. Talk about the tests at home.
Talk to your child about doing his/her best, and encourage your child to remain stress-free during testing days.
2. Be consistent with a regular sleep schedule and balanced meals.
Eating a filling breakfast and getting enough sleep will have a positive impact on your child’s ability to focus and retain information.
3. Give words of encouragement.
Inspirational words have a powerful impact on student performance and boost confidence. Remind your child that he/she has prepared for the tests all year.
4. Get an early start with morning routines, including school arrival.
Students who feel rushed to get to school, start their day with anxiety, and anxiety leads to frustration and poorer test performance.
5. Debrief after the testing day.
Support their efforts to be successful every testing day by talking with your child about his/her day.
More helpful things to remember:
Make sure your student attends school on all of the testing days.
If your child is sick, please report their absence to the grade level clerk.
Please check doctor visits and other appointments and make any changes necessary to ensure your child is in school on testing days.
